The study is concluded with a graduation exam which consists of a practical graduation
project and its defence, an oral exam in the English language and vocational subjects (history
of art, technology and materials). Each successful graduate is awarded the DiS. (FdA) degree
(a certified professional). The yearly tuition fee is CZK 5,000; this amount is divided into
CZK 2,500 in the autumn and CZK 2,500 in the spring semester (if the student achieves the
average mark of 1.5, s/he is charged only a half of the fee in the subsequent year).
Fashion and Textile Design
The study program prepares the students for a wide range of activities related to the design
and manufacture of garments and stage costumes even of high complexity both in terms of
construction and technology. The training proceeds through instruction in theory, art and craft
techniques towards the acquisition of specific knowledge and practical skills that are
necessary in the process of developing and carrying out fashion and stage costume design
projects with a high degree of artistic value and craftsmanship.
The concept of the curriculum consists in expanding each undergraduate’s aesthetic and
cultural awareness, in developing a creative and responsible approach to the assigned tasks
and in the acquisition of theoretical expertise and practical skills in design and manufacture of
a variety of garments and stage costumes of high complexity both in terms of construction and
technology.
The aim of the curriculum is to train professionals who are highly qualified with regards to
artistry, technology and craftsmanship and who are capable of working both independently
and as a part of a team. The instruction relies on the school’s highly qualified staff and the
well-equipped school facilities, as well as on collaboration with renowned external
professionals and institutions.
The Fashion and Textile Design study program trains professionals capable of carrying out
independent design work in the field of fashion and stage costume design. The graduates may
find employment particularly in fashion and costume design and production, in enterprises
and companies focused on clothing manufacture, and in designing and production of historical
and stage costumes for theatre, film and television. Further career options for the graduates,
apart from jobs in creative fields, are technological and managerial work in textile
manufacture, as buying agents, and in various business activities related to fashion industry.
They can also find use for their skills in their own private enterprise. Following the guidelines
of the National System of Occupations, the skillset of each graduate is equivalent to the
profession of an independent fashion designer and model-maker – development of complex
artistic designs into challenging and complex garment patterns for clothing manufacture and
creation of less challenging designs and models of garments. The graduates may also enrol
into universities, particularly those with a related focus of study.
Restoration Departments
The curricula at the departments of conservation and restoration prepare students for the
performance of occupations in the field of conservation and restoration of applied art objects
which are parts of cultural monuments. Over the course of the study the students acquire
theoretical vocational knowledge of art history and the history of crafts, they develop skills in
art and craftsmanship as well as specialized knowledge and practical skills necessary for the
conservation and restoration of damaged objects. They learn to recognize the environmental
factors that affect each damaged object, and to understand the artistic and historical value of a
conserved or restored object while respecting ethical rules and guidelines pertaining to the
profession of a restorer.
The conception of the curricula of the individual departments consists in developing the
aesthetic sensibility of the students, cultivating their sense of precision in craftsmanship and
their feel for the materials they employ. The theoretical instruction is structured with regard
for the interdisciplinary interconnectedness into the general and vocational subjects shared
across all three departments (foreign language, chemistry, art history) and into specialized
vocational study subjects of theoretical and practical nature, including the methods of
documentation.
The curriculum of all three departments includes either a two-month (ceramics and furniture
departments) or a four-month (painting department) internship, undertaken in restoration
workshops of museums and other professional institutions. In this way the students expand
and develop their familiarity with the practices of conservation and restoration under the
supervision of professional restorers.
During their studies, the undergraduates are given opportunities to participate in school-
organized visits to prominent exhibitions as well as field trips both to domestic and to foreign
destinations. The students present the results of their work at school exhibitions and seminars
for the professional public under the school’s patronage.
After graduation, the graduates may find job placements as conservators and restorers in
museums, galleries, archaeological, ecclesiastical and other cultural institutions. They may
also carry out restoration work as a private enterprise predicated on a trade license for the
restoration of applied art objects. A graduate may also obtain a license for the restoration of
applied art objects that are listed as cultural monuments or their parts, issued by the Ministry
of Culture of the Czech Republic. The licence is granted on the basis of an application and a
submission of a restoration documentation (the specific terms and conditions are listed in the
Act No. 20/1987 Coll., on state monument care).
